Days 16 and 17 – Powell, Idaho to Missoula, Montana; rest day

August 19, 2016

Moving into Montana

I woke up just before 4:30 on Friday and by the time I got the tent down and everything in order it was 5:45 when I was on the road. I wanted to leave early partly because once you cross the border you’re in mountain time and lose an hour.  Also, the headquarters of Adventure Cycling is in Missoula and I wanted to visit them before they closed for the weekend. Day 15 – Lowell, Idaho to Powell, Idaho

August 18, 2016

66 Miles with Nothing in Between

Thursday began week three of the trip, which seems hard to believe. I was in Lowell, where they have a sign in town listing the population as 24, but with that number crossed out and 23 written next to it. While this was done as a joke, it might have some truth to it as the word is that the woman who operated the only store in town rather suddenly ran off with a man, leaving the store to be closed down. Day 14 – White Bird, Idaho to Lowell, Idaho

August 17, 2016

The Lewis and Clark Trail

Today’s 72 mile day was a long one. It was even a few miles longer than it should have been due to some inaccurate directions on my map. In any case, I’m here in Lowell on the banks of the Clearwater River and am entering territory that Lewis and Clark explored. [Read more…]

Day 13 – Riggins, Idaho to White Bird, Idaho

August 16, 2016

Fiddle Creek Fruit

One of the lessons learned again today is not to assume that a short ride means an easy ride.  Another is not to assume that stores in small towns stay open late, as in past 5 p.m.

After leaving the town of Riggins, I started out on the 30 mile journey towards White Bird. I properly got some laundry done (in a machine) and hung out at the local library writing the last post. It was nearly 1:00 when I left.   [Read more…]

Day 12 – Council, Idaho to Riggins, Idaho

August 15, 2016

Between the Equator and the North Pole

As mentioned in yesterday’s post, I had a rather bacon heavy breakfast at the 7 Devils Cafe. Then after doing some shopping at the local market I returned to my half star accommodation above the Ace Saloon, where I wrote and cleaned the bike some before heading out. [Read more…]

Day 11 – Cambridge, Idaho to Council, Idaho

August 14, 2016

The Ace Saloon

Yesterday (Sunday) I woke up at 7:30 at Mundo Hot Springs.  With the time change I lost an hour the day before.  The plan was to ride to the town of New Meadows, around 49 miles away.  I didn’t get that far and it ended up being the shortest day of the trip. Just 23 miles. [Read more…]

Day 10 – Halfway, Oregon to Cambridge, Idaho

August 13, 2016

Into Idaho

When I hear something about Idaho, I sometimes think about comedian George Carlin’s routine about states and their mottos.  He compares New Hampshire’s “Live Free or Die” to Idaho’s much less consequential, yet proud, “Famous Potatoes.” On Saturday I finally arrived here. [Read more…]
